About Us

The Gainesville Gaviatas, Inc. is a competitive synchronized swimming team, begun in 1997 by Mary Pat Stephan and Alison Law. We currently have twenty-three swimmers ranging in age from 8-18 years of age.

As a competitive team, members compete in meets throughout the State of Florida, and possibly out of state. The team functions under the rules of Florida Synchronized Swimming, Inc. (FSSI), which is a division of United States Synchronized Swimming, INC.

Currently, two FSSI divisions operate in Gainesville, Gator Synchro, the collegiate division and Gainesville Gaviatas, the youth division

The club has four wonderful experienced coaches who give so much more to the swimmers than the sport requires.

Practice is three times a week. It consists of warm-ups on deck, then conditioning laps, to build stamina. Work on perfecting the respective routines for the upcoming meets follows.

In order to master the sport of synchronized swimming athletes need several important skills. A good command of basic swimming strokes including crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and sidestroke is necessary as synchronized swimming strokes are variations of each of these.

Our club has an annual swim show open to the public in April or May. Watch this site for details.

There are nearly 500 recognized figures in the sport of synchronized swimming Swimmers compete at three levels: novice, intermediate, and age group (advanced).

These groups are mainly based on age and to some degree, ability, of the swimmer.

Synchronized swimming is a very demanding sport requiring much hard work and self-discipline. It also is very rewarding for everyone involved, particularly the swimmers.

All of our parents play an important role in the club. This keeps the club progressing and makes for a safe and fun environment for members and their families.
